Urban Terror is a total conversion mod of id Software's first-person shooter Quake III Arena. It introduces many elements of the tactical shooter genre - team-driven gaming in more realistic environments.
The game itself is free, but developers FrozenSand retains the rights; unauthorised modification and selling is not allowed. Since Urban Terror 4.0, the mod can also be played as a stand-alone game without Quake III Arena using the ioUrbanTerror engine, which is a rebranding of the ioquake3 engine distributed under GNU General Public License.
Our server runs Urban Terror in 'Free For All' Deathmatch mode (we like deathmatch!).
Server Details
Our game server is a 64 bit AMD box with 4 GB of RAM running 64 bit Debian Linux. One of the many games we run on this powerful server is Urban Terror.
The altFIRE Urban Terror game server runs a mixed map cycle in random rotation. If you connect to this server and don't have the current map, an attempt will be made to download it to your PC. Be sure to have Automatic Downloading switched on in your multiplayer options to help with this. You may also need to agree to trust the altFIRE server, depending on your version of the game.
The max players is set to 8. Maps run with a timelimit of 20 minutes and a fraglimit of 20. When either is reached, the next map will load. The server is password protected, so only registered altFIRE members can play.
Getting and installing Urban Terror
You obviously will need a copy of Urban Terror to connect to the server and play. The good news is that this game is completely free. You can download for your particular platform from the official site at http://www.urbanterror.net. You will also need to install the custom map pack, if you do not wish to wait for map downloads at the start of each round.
Connecting to the server
As long as your version of Urban Terror is up to date, connecting to the server is simple. To connect to the server, do the following:
1) Start Urban Terror
2) Drop the command console using the ' key (usually beside number key 1)
3) Type the following to set your password the same as the server:
/password password
The "/" is important. The password is not actually "password", of course. The real password is sent to you when you register.
