Doom 3 is a science fiction horror video game developed by id Software and published by Activision. An example of the first-person shooter genre, Doom 3 was first released for Microsoft Windows on August 3, 2004. The game was later adapted for Linux, as well as being ported for Mac OS X. Later a port of the game to the Xbox console was released on April 3, 2005.
The game is a reboot of the Doom franchise, disregarding the storylines of the previous Doom video games. Doom 3 is set in 2145 on Mars, where a military-industrial conglomerate has set up a scientific research facility to develop fields such as teleportation, biological research and advanced weapons design. However, the teleportation experiments inadvertently open a gateway to Hell, resulting in a catastrophic invasion by demons. The player, an anonymous space marine, must fight through the base and find a way to stop demons from Hell attacking Earth. Doom 3 features an award-winning game engine, id Tech 4, which has since been licensed out to other developers. This engine requires high spec video cards and plenty of RAM/CPU power on the client machine to fully appreciate the game (turning down a lot of settings is recommended for online play).
The game was a critical and commercial success for id Software, selling more than 3.5 million copies worldwide. It is the most successful game by the developer to date (Quake 4 and Quake Wars, while licensed by, were not actually developed by id Software).
Server Details
Our game server is a 64 bit AMD box with 4 GB of RAM running 64 bit Debian Linux. One of the many games we run on this powerful server is Doom III (aka Doom 3).
The altFIRE Doom 3 game runs a default map cycle in sequential rotation. There is also the ability to vote for one of 20 custom maps. The server is password protected, so only registered altFIRE members can play.
Getting and installing Doom 3
You obviously will need a copy of Doom 3 to connect to the server and play. If using Windows or Mac OS X, just buy a copy and install. Then patch to the latest version.
If you are using Linux, simply install the Doom 3 Linux binaries and copy the pak files from either the game CD or from another machine (or partition) with Doom 3 installed. More instructions here. If you experience any issues with sound delay in game, see my article on this problem here.
Regardless of your platform, you will probably also need the custom maps we have installed on the server. Download this file and extract to your base directory under Doom 3. This is an important step! If you do not do this, your Doom 3 client will attempt to download the missing files before connecting, which may take some - so best to download the maps now.
Your client will also automatically download the (tiny) VariLight mod, which we run on this server. This small modification to the game code tapes a flashlight on to the shotgun and machinegun, plus adds a laser sight to your pistol. Sweet!
You can now proceed to connecting to the server.
Connecting to the server
As long as your version of Doom 3 is up to date, connecting to the server is simple. To connect to the server, do the following:
1) Start Doom 3
2) Drop the command console using the ' key (usually beside number key 1)
3)Type the following to initiate the connection:
connect doom3.altfire.com
The server password, when prompted, is the same one provided to you when you register with this site (same for all our other game servers). Any problems, let me know (rawshark@alfire.com).
